General and Elective Surgeries Offered by Horizon Veterinary | Animal Clinic & Surgical Center

Spay and Neuter: Spaying and neutering offers a safe and humane way to prevent unwanted litters and contributes to controlling the pet overpopulation crisis. It also provides health benefits, reducing the risk of uterine, ovarian, and mammary gland cancers in female pets and preventing testicular cancer and prostate problems in males. Spayed and neutered pets are less likely to display unwanted or aggressive behaviors and tend to live longer, healthier, and happier lives.

Cesarean Section: A cesarean or C-section involves the removal of kittens or puppies from the uterus of a cat or dog. They are usually performed in emergency cases when a pet is having complications and cannot give birth safely through natural means. In some cases, we may schedule C-sections for high-risk pets or breeds, depending on their unique needs. Most pets recover well with minimal risk of complications.

Umbilical Hernia Repair: An umbilical hernia is a condition in which your pet’s abdominal contents, like the fat or intestines, push through the abdominal wall where the umbilical cord was attached before birth. This happens when the wall in the area of the umbilical cord fails to fuse properly, leaving a hole where the muscle should be joined. Failing to repair an umbilical hernia can result in the abdominal tissues becoming trapped, leading to abdominal pain, tissue damage, and serious complications.

Gastropexy: Gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV), also known as bloat, is a life-threatening disorder that requires emergency surgery. Gastropexy is a surgical procedure during which we attach the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent the rotation that leads to GDV. We may recommend it as a preventive measure or after correcting GDV to prevent it from recurring.

Laceration Repair: Wounds and lacerations often result from accidental injuries or fights with other animals. We typically clean the area and evaluate the severity of the laceration. In some cases, we may recommend X-rays to ensure there’s no internal damage. Depending on the depth of the laceration, your pet may need staples or multiple layers of sutures to close the wound.

Skin Reconstruction: Skin reconstruction in pets is a surgical procedure used to repair large skin defects, such as when closing a wound using staples or sutures is not an option. The procedure involves harvesting a skin flap or graft from a donor area of your pet’s skin and placing it over the affected area. This allows for the repair of extensive wounds that would otherwise be difficult to close.

Amputation: Amputating an injured or diseased limb is sometimes the only viable option to relieve severe pain and save your pet’s life. It is often required to address irreparable damage resulting from cancer, trauma, or severe infection. Most pets adjust to life after amputation, regaining their mobility and living active lives.

Mass Removal: Discovering a mass can be concerning for pet parents. Our experienced veterinarians may recommend removing these growths for evaluation. While most masses are benign, early identification of malignancy will allow for timely intervention, ensuring the best possible outcomes for your furry friend.

Biopsy: If your furry friend has a lump or bump, we may recommend a procedure known as a biopsy, which involves removing part or all of the mass and sending it to a laboratory for evaluation. Determining whether a mass or tumor is benign or malignant will ensure your furry friend starts prompt treatment if needed.
